EVENTS | APRIL 27, 2025

Thanks to all who joined us for another Creative Curiosity Commons (C3) pop-up event!

What is a Creative Curiosity Commons event?

At the first pop-up Commons back in February, we learned that these events can be an incubator for island action, offering like-minded individuals a place to gather and explore mutual interests and ask, “What’s next?”

Our second event continued this momentum, with opportunities to create, discuss and/or move forward with community & personal pursuits. Scheduled & free-form activities encourage meaningful, focused community discussions alongside creative spontaneity.

Keep scrolling to read about the topics we discussed and see photos of the many activities.

What came out of this event?

With a little fine-tuning to the formula, the Commons vibe was two-fold:

Create that “Commons” space with a multi-generational mix of games, crafts, tables of plenty, networking, potluck, and music AND offer a place and time for an emerging conversation among the next generation of our island food community.

Kid's Clothing Swap

We also had some surprise connections that delighted us! Some community members began discussing how useful an island “kid’s closet” would be to help island families share clothing that their kiddos have outgrown.

The first step forward for that idea will be to organize some island family clothing swaps – one in May for End of School and a larger Commons Back to School event in August with additional community-building activities.

What's Next?

With summer upon us, you’ss see the Co-Op contributing in micro-projects alongside main island events. We’ll resume the Commons events in the fall, once things start to quiet down again.

DISCUSSION: Local Food Movement

It was so fulfilling to connect and share our interests in creating a stronger community around our local food systems.

Together we came up with some great next steps:

  1. Starting a mailing list for our local food community: our goal is to keep the conversation going to connect growers with volunteers, volunteers to experience, and food to people on the island. The new mailing list (aka Google Group) is “AIGROWS” and you can join the conversation here: https://groups.google.com/g/aigrows/
  2. Gardening Together: Sara is hosting the first “DiRT Day” (Digging in Roots Together) at her garden on Sunday May 25th, time TBD. If you’re interested, please rsvp by emailing food@curiositycoop.com. For now, we will limit these groups to a pretty small size so as to stay manageable. Kids are welcome too!
  3. Taking steps to understand the tillable/growable land assets we all have. We know there are many families with farms or just land that could be used to cultivate a growing culture here – for fruit trees, veggie gardens and more! We’d love some volunteers to help us  gather and analyze data for an Island Food Production Inventory.
  4. Planning to all come together for our next discussion in about 6 weeks time. The group agreed to take some time to move micro-activities forward and then regroup for more shared conversation in person.

FREE-FORM ACTIVITIES

  • Table of Plenty – We asked attendees to bring something they wanted to offer others in the community – extra seeds or starts from spring planting, homemade preserves, a recipe, something fresh from the land, or anything in between. Not only was the table full of community generosity but it was beautiful too!
  • Appetizer Potluck – We knew we were pushing the event into early evening, so we encouraged folks to bring an appetizer to share. There were so many delicious morsels to keep us wandering back for more.
  • Collage Art – Once again, whole families had the oppportunity to share art together, creating beauty and experiencing shared creativity by just showing up.
  • Organic Architecture Challenge – One big hit of the event were those spaghetti noodles and mini-marshmallows towers! Kids of all ages rolled up their sleeves to try their hand at engineering under constraints. It wa so much fun to see the results! And yes…all marhsmellow and noodle structures eventually lose cohesion 🙂
